QUACKERY, 2022
Quackery is an absurdist treatise on witchcraft, judgement, and transmutation. It references the Witch Burning Trial from Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), in which a woman is falsely accused of witchcraft according to flawed logic and mass hysteria.
Quackery presents a quizzical scene: a giant cardboard sculpture of a chalice used by curanderas for ceremonial fire (sahumerio); a cartoon bucket full of water, inside of which float a fake battery and duck rendered in the style of dead bug electronics; a Tarot-inspired painting with a big red button that makes a duck-shaped circuit quack; and a schematic of said quacking circuit.
The curatorial logic of Quackery goes something like this: “if birds aren’t real and electricity is modern magic, then she’s a witch.” You be the judge.
